The history of ART jewelry (from the 1940s to the 1970s)
Perhaps this is one of the most mysterious brands of vintage jewelry. Researchers don’t have much information about this company. It is known that ART MODE JEWELRY CREATIONS. INC or simply ART was founded in New York by Arthur Pepper in the mid-1940s. The company produced high quality jewelry in various styles such as Renaissance, Art Deco or Victorian. The exact date of the demise of ART is not known. The company stopped making jewelry in the 70s. Today, ART jewelry is collectible and every year it becomes more and more difficult to find them.
Jewelry labeling
Items from the 1940s were unmarked, entirely handmade, and produced in very limited numbers. In the early 1950s, Mr. Ilennep opened his small shop in New York. Now jewelry is marked Art, ArtMode, less often ModeArt. The ART© copyright mark has been used since 1955, when copyright was registered with the Chamber of Commerce. Art products begin to be mass-produced, but still in small quantities. Despite this, the jewelry was only sold through major retailers and major US department stores. This explains the fact that ART did not have any advertising campaign during its entire existence.
Features of ART Jewelry
In the manufacture of ART jewelry, crystals, imitation pearls and enamel of the highest level were used. Antique gold metal and unusual color combinations are characteristic features of ART. Jewelry from Art is somewhat similar in style to Fiorenza and Hollycraft jewelry. Especially popular was and remains their Christmas collection, as well as heraldic brooches, pendants, bracelets and Maltese crosses.
