History (USA, 1948-1981)
Emmons was founded in Newark, New Jersey in 1948. The founders of the company father and son – Charles X. Stewart and Lyman K. Stewart. Before starting their own business, they were salespeople selling everything from cosmetics to household items. So, at the time of opening their own business, the Stewarts already had vast practical experience and knowledge of the American consumer market.
There is an opinion among costume jewelry experts that Emmons did not make their own jewelry, but ordered them from other well-known brands. Emmons’ main supplier is Sarah Coventry. But in fact, Sarah Coventry was also founded by the Stewart family, only much later than the Emmons. That is why there is so much in common in the jewelry design of these two companies, which confuses researchers. Over time, Sarah Coventry took the lead, and Emmons fell by the wayside.
Emmons ceased to exist in 1981. Since then, her jewelry is not often found on the free market, and the name of the company is not known to the general public. But among collectors and those who are initiated into the history of costume jewelry of the 20th century, the jewelry of this brand is of great interest.
