It is believed that the art of mosaic originated in ancient Greece, later it gained popularity in ancient Rome. The golden age of micromosaic art was the 18th century, when Roman masters exported mosaics to the Parisian court for the private collections of Maria Luigi of Austria, Caroline and Josephine Bonaparte.
Since 1987, the Italian brand SICIS has been creating decorative items using mosaics, and since 1989, Maurizio Leo Placuzzi, inspired by antique jewelry, began to create jewelry using micromosaics.
Sicis has created a department of micromosaic jewelry and watches dedicated to the study and improvement of the application of this technique. The creation of each piece of jewelry requires many hours of work by only one specialist from start to finish, otherwise the difference in “handwriting” will be visible. Only the most experienced master artists of the brand can do this.
Enamel or glass paste with the addition of diamond dust is melted at a high temperature, then stretched to obtain long “threads” of different colors, which are then cut into small particles (tesserae) and used to lay out the conceived pattern. In ancient times, micromosaics required a depth of 3-4 mm, modern craftsmen reduced it to 1.5 mm or even less. Until the 19th century, this technique was used only on flat surfaces, but now the craftsmen of the SICIS brand successfully create patterns on three-dimensional surfaces.
