Sherman is a brand of rare and collectible jewelry. The company was founded in Montreal in 1947 by Gustave Sherman, the son of immigrants from Eastern Europe. His first and, for a time, only employee was Dmitry Kuritsa, a Ukrainian jeweler who had also immigrated to Canada.
Made using only genuine Swarovski crystals from Austria, the jewelry was either heavily gold-plated or triple-rhodium-plated and was very expensive – even in the early days of the company, jewelry cost about $40, the equivalent of today’s prices. That money is $500.
Their jewelry is sold in fashion boutiques across the country and abroad.
In the 1970s, glamorous crystal jewelry began to go out of fashion, and gold, silver, and abstract jewelry became popular. Sherman did not want to slow down and tried to switch to jewelry, but the company closed in 1981. Shermans are highly collectible, primarily due to the high quality and rarity of the pieces.
