Brand history
The motto of Piaget House is “watches and jewelry at the same time”. Practical mechanics in the hands of real jewelers turns into a work of art, becoming more and more elegant and miniature. It is easy to see how the style and fashion of the second half of the 20th century changed with Piaget jewelry watches.
The history of the House of Piaget began in 1874 in the tiny village of La Cote-aux-Fees, which is located in the center of the Jura mountains – the most watchmaking region in Switzerland. Together with the rest of the villagers, Georges-Édouard Piaget, a native of the canton of Neuchâtel, began to handcraft watch movements of high precision. The business became a family business when Edward’s 14 children began to help their father.
Piaget watchmaking excellence has been perfected for seven decades. The bet was made on the production of not watches, but mechanisms, and extra-class ones at that.
1943 – The Piaget brand is officially registered.
The grandson of the founder of the House of Piaget, Valentin, took the initiative to create an ultra-thin watch mechanism, an innovation that quickly became the hallmark of the brand.
1957 – Piaget decided to use only precious metals in watchmaking. The company’s specialists have become recognized masters of working with gold and platinum. The release of a unique watch strap, woven from small gold rings, prompted the idea of creating a jewelry watch using precious stones and diamonds.
1960 – Four years after the invention of the caliber 9P hand-wound movement, the self-winding caliber 12P movement, just 2.3 millimeters thick, was introduced. This invention was listed in the Guinness Book of Records. In 1970, Piaget introduced the caliber 7P, an ultra-thin quartz movement. At present, Piaget still uses ultra-thin movements in its watches, which makes this brand recognizable at first sight. To this day, every Piaget watch movement is assembled at the factory in La Cote-aux-Fees, including the new 3.5mm tourbillon movement launched in 2002.
