Pentti was the older brother of renowned glass and metal designer Timo Sarpaneva. He first studied graphic design at the Institute of Industrial Art in Finland before turning to metalworking and jewellery design in his 30s. Contrary to the jewellery design of the time, Pentti used direct objects from nature to create many of his pieces. Others were taken from his observations of the natural world in Finland. His childhood in the countryside with his father, a blacksmith, may also have served as an inspiration.
Sarpaneva has created jewellery for Finnish jewellery makers Kalevala Koru and Turun Hopea that is timeless and still evokes a strong emotional impact. Interestingly, there was a period in the 20th century of jewellery from the 1960s and 1970s that embodies today’s desire to recreate the natural world.
His silver pieces combine traditional themes of nature and Finnish culture, uniquely interpreted by the artist. His use of local stones, many of which are left uncut in their more natural state, makes his jewellery unique.
