Biography of Pavit Gujral
Pavit was born in Calcutta, but soon her family moved to Chandigarh. These two cities have had the greatest impact on Pavit, they are two opposites, if Calcutta is art, history and chaos, then Chandigarh is a modern and well-planned city. In India, a country rich in gemstones, where society still has a caste structure, jewelry is mostly concentrated in family-owned companies, where traditions, resources and connections are passed down from generation to generation. The Pavit family never had jewelers, but from childhood she was interested in culture and art, and her special passion was precious stones. She has always felt that her calling is to design jewelry. In 2015, Pavit graduated from the famous American Gemological Institute in New York and received a degree in gemology.
The Indian jewelry market is dominated by men and it is not easy for a young girl to gain recognition in this archaic society. But Pavit manages to create new trends in the development of the jewelry industry, introducing fresh ideas and techniques. For two consecutive years, she was a finalist for the prestigious IJ Jewelers Choice Design Awards in Jaipur, India. In 2020, Pavit was honored with two Saul Bell Design Awards.
Pavit has a passion for scuba diving and the Dancing Fish collection was inspired by the beautiful underwater world of the Andaman Islands. Necklace (1st place) depicting the dance of a graceful red fish, performed using complex colors, rendered with rubies, turning into pink sapphires and ending with white diamonds, creating a unique ombre effect. The design of the decoration, in addition to amazing colors, conveys dynamics, the feeling of the movement of a fish in the water.
The continuation of the maritime theme was the Coral ring (2nd place in the competition).
Colorful corals make the ocean so vibrant and alive and is home to many of the creatures of the marine world. It took about two and a half months to create the ring. The main difficulty was to fix trillion-cut diamonds and tsavorite garnet in very soft opal.
Pavit Gujral has only two large collections so far – the Marine World Collection and the Nature Collection. In her jewelry, she skillfully conveys the mood with the help of colors, she masterfully manages to select color transitions. In a set of cabochons with blue tanzanites and pink sapphires, she managed to convey the elusive color of the twilight sky when the sun gives the sky pink tones. Nature in her work acquires a gentle and lyrical mood. Langur earrings convey the playful character of monkeys and the dynamics of their movements.
Pavit Gujral is undoubtedly a talented girl who, in her work, with the help of new original forms, conveys the beauty of fleeting moments of nature, captures the subtlest facets of her mood.
