The Paris Exhibition of 1839 introduced the world to the name of a man who would become one of the most famous and most criticized silversmiths of the 19th century. This was François-Désiré Froment-Meurice (1802-1855), whose works were admired and criticized at the same time.

François-Désiré Froment-Meurice was born into the family of a jeweler, François Froment-Meurice, and lost his father at an early age. His mother soon remarried to a jeweler, Pierre Meurice. François-Désiré, who took his stepfather’s surname, graduated from high school and began training as a jeweler. He was very successful in this field. At the French Industrial Exhibition of 1844, he received a gold medal.

Admirers compared him to the great Cellini, while opponents believed that he took a little bit of everything from other masters. However, it cannot be denied that his best works are magnificent in technique. Froment-Meurice’s fame increased significantly after the London Exhibition of 1851, and his Renaissance-style works were in demand throughout Europe.
