Christian Dior (Christian Dior) 1905-1957 – French fashion designer, founder of the Christian Dior fashion house.
“Luxury is simplicity,” said the maestro and never backed down from his words.
Christian Dior was born on January 21, 1905 in France, in the small town of Granville. His father was involved in the trade in chemical fertilizers, making his fortune on it. Christian’s mother was a gorgeous woman who knew how to spend money on beauty and pleasure. The maestro loved and admired her, carrying these tender feelings throughout his life.
History of Christian Dior brand
At the age of 6, Christian moved to Paris with his family. Everything went on as usual: the parents were busy with their business, Christian was preparing for the diplomatic career that his father had chosen for him. The future couturier himself was more attracted to art: he often visited museums and exhibitions, studied painting and music. In 1925, the future couturier graduated from the Free School, and in 1928, together with his good friend Jean Bonjac, he opened an art gallery, where works by André Derain, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso were exhibited.
Everything changed in an instant: in 1931, Dior’s mother dies of a serious illness, and his father, who financed the gallery, is rapidly losing his fortune, after a while, contracting tuberculosis. Christian is forced to make money: he starts selling his sketches of clothes and hats to Le Figaro Illustre magazine. He is quickly noticed by the famous fashion designer Robert Piguet. But the professional path is interrupted: Dior is drafted into the army, where he serves in the south of France.
Returning to Paris in 1941, Dior once again plunges into the world of fashion. He gets a job at the model house of Lucien Lelong (Lucien Lelong). A year later, Christian creates a perfume line that will later become the Christian Dior Perfume company. The first perfume was Miss Dior, Diorissimo, Diorama. Dior himself spoke about his perfumery products: “It is enough to open the bottle for all my dresses to appear, and every woman I dress leaves behind a whole train of desires. Perfume is a necessary complement to a woman’s personality, it is the final chord for a dress, it is a rose, which Lancre used to sign his paintings. ”
Who Designed Dior Jewelry?
The first jewelry for Dior was made by the house Gripoix (Maison Gripoix), which produced costume jewelry for Chanel and other fashion houses in the pre-war and post-war years, as well as the main jeweler of French couturiers of the 20th century. Robert Goossens, His jewelry and accessories have always been very innovative and bold – on the verge of art and jewelry, fusing the soul of an artist with the hands of an artisan. He used metallic elements in a gold frame; inlaid with precious and semi-precious stones mixed with wood, pearls, leather or marble. Rhinestone was his favorite material. Monsieur Bijou, as he was called in France, has already collaborated with such fashionable
houses like Balenciaga, Schiaparelli, Grès, Rochas, etc.

Interesting Christian Dior Facts:
– Dior was inspired by flowers! It is no coincidence that the famous silhouette of the dresses of his very first collection, New Look, is shaped like an inverted corolla of a flower. “Apart from women, flowers are the most divine creatures.”
– Dior was a very superstitious person. He believed in the power of talismans and amulets, and carried them with him. The five-pointed star is a special symbol for the couturier. One day he picked her up on the street, outside the British Embassy in Paris. On the same evening, he met businessman Marcel Boussac, who supported his idea of founding his own fashion brand. However, before accepting his financial offer, Dior went for a consultation with the fortune teller Madame Dolaye, who convinced him to open a “Christian Dior fashion house” with that name. This was not the first and far from the only appeal of the couturier to the help of predictors – he used it all his life.
– Christian Dior counts perfume as the finishing touch to the dress. He decided to create his own fragrance as soon as he opened his fashion house, and in 1947, with the help of his childhood friend (and former director of the Coty perfume brand) Serge Eftler-Luis, he created Miss Dior perfume, the fragrance of which conquered more than one post-war generation of women throughout the world. In the name “Miss Dior” two strong affections of Christian were intertwined at once – to his younger sister Catherine, with whom he was very close and to whom these spirits were dedicated, and to England, hence – “Miss”, not “Mademoiselle”.
